Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone produced by your adrenal glands. Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different bodily functions and carry messages throughout your blood to your organs, muscles, tissues, and skin. These signals let your body know what it needs to do and when it needs to do it.
Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones. They suppress inflammation in your tissues and control metabolism in your muscles, liver, fat, and bones. Glucocorticoids also affect sleep-wake cycles.
Cortisol affects organs and tissues in your body. Its duties include the following:
- Regulating your stress response
- Controlling your body’s use of fat, proteins, and carbohydrates and your metabolism.
- Suppresses inflammation.
- Regulates blood pressure.
- Regulates blood sugar.
- Helps control the sleep-wake cycle.
Cortisol is great, but what happens if it is high? Experiencing abnormally high cortisol levels for a long period is a health danger that can cause increased weight gain, fatty deposits between the shoulder blades, muscle weakness in the upper arms, high blood pressure, and weak bones.
On the other hand, low cortisol can cause fatigue, weight loss, poor appetite, and low blood pressure. So high cortisol is not good for you, and neither is low cortisol.
There are some things you can do to regulate your cortisol. For example, you can get quality sleep, exercise regularly, limit stress and stressful thinking, practice deep breathing, and laugh.
See your health provider and the providers at Bodysculpt. They can help you with cortisol management and give you help counteract high or low cortisol. If you have high-stress levels, talk to your provider about the steps to minimize stress and avoid hits to your health.
